Working with Mothers Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence with their Infants Recording

Session Details:

Infants and young children are developmentally impacted directly by their environments. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in families where violence and trauma are regular occurrences, specifically when caregivers are harming others or being harmed. Nearly 1 million Canadian children are exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) annually with the majority of reports to child protection services being for children under the age of 3 years. Experiencing IPV was exacerbated globally by the COVID-19 pandemic while at the same time, real-life practice opportunities to learn how to appropriately respond to infants experiencing this violence against their mothers was reduced.

This session first covered the fundamentals of the impact of experiences of intimate partner violence on infants and young children. Then participants had the opportunity to interact with a virtual gaming scenario involving a home visit to a mother with an infant who may be experiencing intimate partner violence. Please note: the recording of this session only includes the presentation portion of the workshop and closing remarks. The virtual gaming scenario can not be included as it must be facilitated live.

NEW: Study Opportunity: "Exploring the use of virtual gaming simulation to enhance clinical skill development in home visiting practitioners when intimate partner violence is present"

The purpose of this study is to examine the utility of a virtual gaming simulation (VGS) to increase home visiting practitioners' confidence and ability to engage in reflective practice in the presence of intimate partner violence. Additionally, we aim to evaluate if asynchronous VGS is an effective education modality. This knowledge will guide future development of educational initiatives for professionals. Findings may be used for clinical training to improve outcomes for maternal and infant care.
